Robby Nichols and his 1957 Ford. Robby is from Hiawassee Georgia where he grew
up and continues to work in the area. He has been a car enthusiast since his
high school days at Hiawassee High. He purchased this car in 1987 in Habersham
County. When Robby purchased this car he found out it was a retired liquor hauling
car. After completion of the car, Robby had the pleasure of having it appear
on the front cover of a past issue of Hot Rod Magazine.
The car is a 1957 Ford Custom 300 two door sedan. Robby and his Dad did most
all the work on the car, including installing the 429 ci Ford v-8 engine out
of a 1971 Ford Galaxie. The engine has been redone and now sports a mild cam
and a Holly 750 double pumper 4-barrell carburetor on an Offenhauser aluminum
intake manifold. Robby was able to use the stock free flowing 429 headers and
coupled it to the nice sounding dual exhaust system. The engine is turning out
400 horsepower and is hooked to a top-loader four speed manual transmission.
He used a narrowed 9 inch Ford differential with 3:25 gears and Mosier axles
to accommodate larger rear tires.
Robby installed 1973 Ford Torino front spindles with disc brakes to beef up
the suspension and convert to the disc brakes, while the rear uses the standard
drum brakes. The larger tires are P215/70RX15 B.F. Goodrich on the front and
rear mounted on Torq Trust Aluminum polished wheels.
The interior has been fitted with custom bucket seats in the front with the
standard bench in the back. The dash has its original shape but has been fitted
with a cluster of new custom gauges. The gray interior was installed by Skip
Walters Interiors in Franklin, NC and the Lectric Current Ford Red paint was
done by Jerry Jewel of Blairsville, GA. This car has been beautifully done,
’57 Fords are hard to come by and Robby and his Dad did a great job on
this one. They get a lot of response when they attend cruise-ins and car shows.
